What Is Involved in Bee Keeping?

Table of Contents

Bee keeping is an occupation that requires a lot of time, patience, and understanding. You need to be committed for the long run in order to succeed as a bee keeper.
While the practice of keeping bees has been around for many centuries, it has only become popular in recent times. Bee keepers who have been doing it for many years now have even said that they can’t imagine a world without them. Keeping bees has so many advantages over other methods of farming and there are so many different ways you can go about it!
In this blog post we will give you some insights on what keeping bees entails, why people do so, and how to get started if you’re interested. Keep reading to learn more!

How Far Away From Your House Should You Keep Bees?

There are a few guidelines that bee keepers follow when they’re setting up their hives. The first guideline is the distance. That is, how far away from your house should you keep your bees? It’s best to place them as close as possible because it helps alleviate issues with in-hive parasites and diseases. As a result, you want to try and keep them no more than 20 feet away from where you live, 30 at most. This allows for quick access to your hive if something goes wrong. Many people will place their hives on the roof of their homes or nearby trees but this isn’t always safe for the bees or homeowners as things can fall into the hive during storms.
Another important thing is whether or not you need to be able to see into the hive at all times. If you have an open view into the hive, there is a risk that predators could get inside and harm your bees or steal from them like others might do in order to make money off of their honey. For this reason, many bee keepers prefer to use screened hives which allows for a clear yet protected view of what’s going on inside the hive.

How Many Bees Should You Start With?

When you first start beekeeping, you need to understand that the amount of bees you get will depend on how much room you have for them.
If you have an acre or more of land, then it is recommended that you get about 50-100 hives. If you only have a small backyard or even a few acres, then it can be best to start with 12-20 hives.
As your experience grows the more hives and queens you can get.
There are other factors that will influence the number of hives and queens that are needed as well such as what type of bees are being kept, what season they are being kept, how far away from their home they will be moved, etc.
As your experience increases and if there is money to be made from it then more hives and queens may be purchased. The decision on how many hives to buy should be determined by personal preference and what suits the time constraints of bee keeping for the bee keeper themselves.

What Do Beginner Beekeepers Need?

Bee keeping is a lifelong occupation. In order to be successful, you should have the patience of a saint and the commitment of a professional. People who are new to bee keeping need some basic supplies to get started. Some of these supplies include:
– Bee suit- This is needed to protect you from stings while you are working with bees.
– Protective gear- You will be constantly moving around in your hives and need something that protects you from stings.
– Hive tool- Without this, it will be difficult to extract honey from your hives.
– Hives- These can cost anywhere between $500-$1,000 dollars depending on how many hives you want to purchase and what kind of quality they are made out of.
There are also many plans out there for beginners! It would be best for beginners to start by purchasing one or two hives at first, then slowly build up their hives over time as they get comfortable with their bees.

Can You Be a Beekeeper Without Getting Stung?

It’s true that beekeepers are usually stung by bees. But don’t worry, there are plenty of ways to avoid these stings.
First and foremost, you can use the net to catch the insects instead of just your hands. This is good for those who don’t want to get stung and also makes it easier for beginners because they won’t have to keep track of all their tools.
Another great way to avoid getting stung is by wearing protective clothing when you first meet the bees. A lot of people wear a veil or a hat with a screened on top so that nothing can sting them on their face or head.
In order to protect yourself from getting stung, it is important that you stay in control while handling the bees. One way this can happen is if you relocate the hive into an off-grid location such as a greenhouse or garden shed during winter so they won’t be able to come out and sting you at all!
